The birds of Equatorial Guinea fall into three distinct geographic categories: the Gulf of Guinea, the Cameroon Line mountains, and the Lower Guinea Rainforest. Gulf of Guinea endemics are typical of islands that are only colonized by trans-oceanic dispersal, and are largely restricted to Annobon Island within the country. The birds of the country’s highlands, especially in Bioko and the Monte Alen regions, are typical of the Cameroon Line, and share a lot of similarities to the birds of highland Cameroon. The lowlands of Bioko and the RegiĆ³n Continental are very similar to the rest of the Lower Guinea region, and contain an avifauna typical of this area.
